Cold sores are small but painful blisters that usually occur on the edges of your lips, but can also appear in your mouth and on your tongue. Cold sores can last for up to a week before gradually healing. They are contagious and transferred by direct contact with infected skin or saliva. Once in your system, the herpes simplex virus (HSV) that causes cold sores can remain dormant for extended periods of time until the virus becomes active again. This can be brought on by stress, chapped lips, extreme sunlight exposure, physical exhaustion, or illness.

Symptoms of cold sores:

  • Pain around mouth
  • Fever and sore throat
  • Swollen neck glands (lymph nodes)
